Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Son of former president ninth detainee in 'hidden loans' case

Maputo, Feb. 18 (Lusa) – The authorities in Mozambique have detained Ndambi Guebuza, a son of the country’s former president, Armando Guebuza, as part of an ongoing investigation into the ‘hidden debt’ scandal that pushed the country into default.
Guebuza is the second person close to the former president to be detained since Thursday. Inês Moiane, his father’s former personal secretary, has also been detained.
The detention of Ndambi Guebuza was repored late on Friday by the news bulletins of STV and TVM, two of the country’s leading television broadcasters.
Nine people have now been detained in Mozambique as part of the investigation into the $2.2 billion (€1.92 billion) loans taken out in secret by public enterprises and guaranteed by the state in 2013 e 2014, during Armando Guebuza’s time in office.
Of these nine, a Maputo court on Friday ruled that seven should be held on remand, according to a source linked to the case. Ndambi Guebuza had not yet been brought before a judge while Elias Moaine, nephew of Inês, has been released on bail of 1 million meticais (€14,000).
The hearings took place throughout the day on Friday at the court in downtown Maputo.
Now being held on remand are António do Rosário, deputy director of the three public companies at the centre of the scandal (Ematum, Proindicus and MAM), Gregório Leão, former director of the State Security and Information Service (SISE), Bruno Tandade, a former SISE operative, Inês Moiane and Teófilo Nhangumele, who is alleged to have come up with the idea of setting up the companies and seeking the loans.
In addition to these five, who were detained on Thursday, Sérgio Namburete and Sidónio Sitoe, were detained on Friday.
The nine detentions follow three and a half years of investigations and after a US court issued an international warrant for the arrest Manuel Chang, a former finance minister of Mozambique, who was detained on 29 December in South Africa. He is awaiting his extradition hearing in custody.
The US charge sheet contains correspondence and documents that led prosecutors to conclude that the three public companies were used as part of a corruption and money laundering scheme with a view to enriching several suspects.
Sources close to the case say that further detentions could take place in the next few days.
