HINA - Research shows water-supplying rivers growing smaller

ZAGREB, Feb 10 (Hina) - Extreme precipitation, which in the northern Adriatic region of Istria recently sent river levels rising and resulted in a large quantity of waste ending up in rivers, is part of an increasingly frequent torrential activity of rivers whose annual quantity of water is actually decreasing, research has shown.
Experts therefore underline the need to research waters and improve the system of environmental protection, notably adaptation to climate change.
Air temperatures rising, precipitation declining
A recent project conducted by Croatian and Slovenian karst experts, covering cross-border confluences in Istria, has shown that in the past 52 years air temperatures in that area have increased by 4.5 degrees Celsius per 10 years while precipitation has decreased by 2% per ten years.
The project also shows that in some rivers, for example the Slovenian river Rizarna, the water flow has decreased by as much as 10.3 percent per ten years.
And while water resources are decreasing - even though some officials underline that Croatia is among leading countries in terms of water reserves - and periods of drought and short torrential and violent activity of rivers are becoming more frequent, experts call for serious research into the filling and draining of water resources and movement of underground waters.
They also warn about the irreplaceable environmental impact of high water, which power and water management companies mostly depict as harmful and which actually plays an important role in keeping the environment in balance.
The joint project shows an evident trend of declining annual river flows and points to the need to continue research into how karst waters behave.
