Lusa - Business News - East Timor: Opposition wants 'sustainable' development of Greater Sunrise

Dili, Jan. 10 (Lusa) - The leader of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin), currently in the opposition, on Thursday, said that the party supports the development of the Greater Sunrise wells in the Timor Sea, but calls for then to be exploited in a "sustainable" way.
“Our position is more than clear. We are in favour of the development of the Greater Sunrise field, but we are also in favour of sustainable development that benefits the people and does not harm them,” Mari Alkatiri told Lusa.
The leader of Fretilin, which has the largest bench in East Timor’s National Parliament, accused Xanana Gusmão – Leader of the Alliance for Change and Progress (AMP), the government’s coalition – of wanting to “manipulate public opinion” on this subject.
On Tuesday, in parliament, East Timor's main negotiator for the Timor Sea, Gusmão, considered the purchase of majority share in the consortium of the Greater Sunrise as in the “interest of the state”, challenging the opposition to clarify their position.
Alkatiri insisted that the party’s position has been the same and said that Gusmão – currently a representative of the government for the affairs of the Timor Sea – has not clarified the uncertainties about the project, particularly the purchase of a majority share in the consortium.
He said that there are still doubts about “exactly what you are buying” with the agreement to purchase ConocoPhillips and Shell’s holdings in the consortium – for $650 million – and on the economic and financial viability of the project.
Alkatiri rejected accusations of pressuring the president about the decisions he has taken, including the December veto to changes to the oil operations law – to facilitate the purchase of shares in Greater Sunrise – which were reapproved by parliament on Thursday.
