EFE - 10 dead, child missing as devastating flash floods sweep Spain's Mallorca

At least 10 people were killed and a child remained missing Wednesday after torrential rains and flash floods ravaged hillside towns located in the east of Spain's Balearic island of Majorca, emergency services said.
Rescue teams continued their efforts to locate a missing five-year-old boy who was traveling in the family car with his mother and eight-year-old sister when it was swept up by rising floodwater.
The mother was able to save her daughter but lost her own life trying to save her son, according to several witnesses in the town of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, one of the worst-hit areas.
Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and thanked emergency responders, whom he joined at a central command center set up in Sant Llorenç.
The leader of the Socialist Party government took a brief tour of the town to witness the considerable material damage left behind by the inundation.
Persistent rainfall and fierce storms brought fast-running water cascading down the hillsides in the Llevant Peninsula region and overflowing rivers swept through towns and villages, bringing with them numerous vehicles, including some that were occupied.
Several bodies were discovered in the coastal towns of Arta and S'illot, where the network of rivers flowing down past Sant Llorenç drain into the Mediterranean Sea on the islands east coast.
The deputy mayor of Sant Llorenç, Antonia Bauza, told Spanish radio station SER that two Britons traveling in a taxi at the time of the flash flood were among the victims and that the driver of the vehicle was missing.
The United Kingdom's ambassador to Spain shared a message of support for those affected by the flooding in Mallorca and the country's Foreign Office updated its travel advice to the zone.
Over 500 responders from Spain's Civil Guard, firefighters, local police and civil protection units have worked throughout the night and into Wednesday in the search and rescue operations.
Up to 220 liters (53 gallons) of water per square meter fell on Tuesday evening in Sant Llorenç, the government said.
Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, is one of the country's main tourist destinations.
The Llevant Peninsula, the region affected by the torrential rain, has several rivers running down from hilly terrain toward the island's eastern Mediterranean coast.
