CNA - Cyprus, Greece and Egypt leaders in Crete for 6thTrilateral Summit

CNA - Antonios Gkildakis - Greece/ELOUNDA
Leaders of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt gather on Wednesday in Elounda, Crete, for the 6thTrilateral Summit, to discuss, among others, energy security and terrorism, the Cyprus issue and the Middle East peace process, as well as take stock of their trilateral cooperation so far. The signing of several agreements is also expected to take place, while Ministers from the three countries are set to meet on the sidelines.

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras and the President of Egypt Abdel Fatah al Sisi are expected to start their consultations with bilateral meetings at a seaside resort, in Elounda, before all three of them meet for a tête-à-tête. The Trilateral Summit with the participation of national delegations is scheduled to take place immediately after.

The three leaders will later address the media and subsequently attend a working lunch. In the margins of the Summit, several trilateral meetings at ministerial level are also expected to take place. The President of Cyprus is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Chirstodoulides, Energy Minister Yiorgos Lakkotrypis, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou and Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou.

President Anastasiades twitted on Tuesday that the trilateral meeting is a “fruitful continuation of previous meetings” and “signals a new perspective for further enhancing the already excellent relations and strong bonds of friendship” between the three countries.

Prodromou stated yesterday that topics in the Summit’s agenda include energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean, counterterrorism, the Cyprus issue, migration, the Middle East peace process, EU-Egypt relations, diaspora matters and issues about Turkey, Syria and Libya.

He added that summit participants will also review ongoing projects and the areas of trilateral cooperation in the fields of economy, technology, communications, cultural heritage and education. Moreover, they will also discuss the establishment of a Secretariat to enhance the trilateral scheme of cooperation and the implementation of relevant projects, Prodromou said.

The Spokesman further noted that a series of memoranda and agreements will be signed probably during the Summit, concerning measures to prevent theft, illegal excavation, illicit import/ export or transfer of cultural heritage artefacts, the cooperation for the training of customs personnel and in other administrative areas, cooperation between the ports of Piraeus, Limassol and Port Said, environmental and sustainable development training, a memorandum between investment promotion agencies and a memorandum concerning small and medium sized companies and startups.

In an interview with Egyptian daily Al Akhbar, Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said that while in Crete, the leaders will take stock of developments in the various fields of cooperation, agreed during previous Summits, and evaluate ongoing projects.

“We see the Summit as an opportunity to reconfirm our political dedication in producing substantial results in the various fields of our cooperation” he said.

He also noted that the common objective of this trilateral cooperation since the beginning has been the creation of conditions of peace, stability and prosperity.

The course of trilateral cooperation since 2014
-------------------------------------
The first Trilateral Cooperation Summit of Cyprus, Greece and Egypt took place in Cairo on November 8, 2014 with the participation of President Anastasiades, President Sisi, and then Greek Premier Antonis Samaras.

A second Summit took place in Nicosia, on April 29, 2015, and was followed by the 3d Summit in Athens, a few months later, on December 9, 2015.

Cairo hosted the 4thSummit on October 11, 2016 and in November 2017 it was again Nicosia’s turn to welcome the leaders for their 5thSummit.
