Lusa - Business News - Portugal: PM intends to deepen Portugal-Angola trade relations

Lisbon, April.26,2024 (Lusa) - Portugal's prime minister said on Friday that he intends to maintain bilateral cooperation between Portugal and Angola and ‘deepen trade relations’, pointing out that there are many Portuguese companies operating in ‘strategic areas’ for Luanda.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the president of Angola, João Lourenço, at the prime minister's official residence in São Bento, Lisbon, Luís Montenegro guaranteed that cooperation between the two countries and peoples ‘will continue’.
‘I had the opportunity to give the president of Angola an overview of our intentions, as the Portuguese government, to maintain this close relationship between our governments in many areas: from culture to education, to economic relations, which we have every interest in deepening,’ he emphasised.
The head of the Portuguese government said that it was the intention of the two countries to hold a meeting of the Portugal-Angola Joint Intergovernmental Commission in Lisbon in the coming months, in order to ‘follow up on the strategic cooperation programme’ and ‘deepen trade relations’ between the two countries, guaranteeing ‘more intensity in the activities’ of Angolan and Portuguese companies.
‘Today we have many Portuguese companies operating in priority, strategic areas in Angola: in the agri-food sector, textiles, pharmaceuticals, tourism, construction, renewable energies, technological areas, and we are very interested in continuing along this common path,’ he said.
Montenegro said that the government has ‘every interest’ in consolidating these positions ‘within a framework that is not only bilateral, but also multilateral’.
‘From this point of view, I will have the opportunity to continue interacting with president João Lourenço, cooperating with Angola within the framework of Angola's relationship with the European Union, within the framework of the CPLP, the United Nations and the G20, given that we were both invited by Brazil to take part in the work of the G20 this year,’ he stressed.
The prime minister thanked João Lourenço for visiting Portugal, highlighting ‘the symbolism and significance of his presence on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of 25 April’ and the ‘magnificent speech he gave’ on Thursday at the session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Revolution at the Belém Cultural Centre (CCB).
In this speech, the president of Angola said that the challenge facing the former colonies today is ‘the consolidation of democracy, the diversification and strengthening’ of their economies and welcomed the ‘fraternal bonds of friendship’ between Portugal and the Portuguese Language Countries in Africa.
With João Lourenço at his side, Montenegro emphasised that, in this speech, the Angolan head of state testified to ‘the historical, cultural and extremely deep relationship that unites the Angolan people and the Portuguese people, which also unites the Government of Portugal and the Presidency of the Republic of Angola’.
‘The words he spoke to us will certainly mark our relationship of cooperation, which already has many achievements, but will also translate in the coming years into more well-being for the Angolan and Portuguese people,’ he said.
Emphasising that João Lourenço's presence ‘had a great significance that will continue to be revealed in the coming months’ and in 2025, ‘when the 50th anniversary of Angola's independence is celebrated’, Montenegro expressed his gratitude ‘for his availability, for his work, for his cooperation, for his friendship’.
‘It is with the future in mind, with the well-being of Angolans and Portuguese in mind that we welcome you today, in the hope that our relations, the stronger they are, the more productive they will be for the quality of life of our peoples,’ he said.
This year, the heads of state of Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, African Portuguese Language Countries (PALOP), and Timor-Leste took part in Lisbon in a session to commemorate the 25th of April.
