Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Non-financial sector borrowing falls almost €7.5B Y-o-Y in February

Lisbon, April 23,2024 (Lusa) - The non-financial sector borrowings, which includes public administrations, companies and private individuals, fell by €7.472 billion in February this year, year-on-year, to €800.372 billion, the BdP said on Tuesday.
Compared to January, this indicator fell by around €584 million, according to a statistical information note published today on the Bank of Portugal (BdP) website.
At the end of February, private sector borrowings totalled €441.614 billion, in a category that includes private companies and individuals, while in the public sector - between public administrations and public companies - the figure was €358.758 billion.
In year-on-year terms, borrowing by the non-financial public sector fell by €2.217 billion and the private sector by €5.254 billion, compared to year-on-year variations of -€1.634 billion and +€1.050 billion, respectively.
The BdP said that the decrease in public sector borrowing was "largely due to the net amortisation of Treasury bonds held by the financial sector (€3.7 billion)", an effect "partially offset by the net issue of Treasury bills (€1.9 billion), mostly held by foreigners, public administrations and the financial sector".
In the private sector, private company borrowing fell by €4.591 billion and individual borrowing fell by €664 million, despite month-on-month increases of €915 and €135 million euros.
In February, the annual rate of change of total indebtedness of private companies was 2.1%, 0.4 percentage points more than in the same month of 2023, while the annualised total indebtedness of private individuals fell by 2.93 percentage points to -0.24%.
