Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Trial for two accused of financing, spying for Cabo Delgado rebels

Maputo, April,23,2024 (Lusa) - Two Mozambican citizens will stand trial in Cabo Delgado province, in the north of the country, on charges of financing terrorism, gathering information, joining a terrorist organisation and criminal association, according to a source from the public prosecutor's office.
According to the same source, both were arrested "in flagrante delicto" in March 2023, in the town of Mocímboa da Praia, in possession of 885,500 meticais ( €13,000) and "various foodstuffs that were intended to guarantee the sustainability of a terrorist group that was camped in Cabo Delgado".
The central office for combating organised and transnational crime (GCCCOT) opened criminal proceedings against the two citizens and, according to the public prosecutor's office, from the investigation "it emerged that the defendants, as well as buying foodstuffs, bought SIM cards and top-up coupons from mobile phone operators and sent them to the leader of the terrorist group".
"He, in turn, distributed them to the other members to ensure communications, internet, as well as money transactions, using mobile wallets, for the members of the group and to support their families," the source added.
"Once the SIM cards had been used, they were destroyed as a way of erasing the traces and evading justice, and with the money they acquired information for the leader of the terrorist group about the location, movement and position of the defence and security forces," the source continued, adding that once the investigation was over, charges were brought and the case was sent to the Cabo Delgado Provincial Court on April 22, with the two defendants in custody.
"The official suspects are sufficiently indicted for the crimes of financing terrorism, gathering information, membership of a terrorist organisation and criminal association," concluded the source.
The province has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency, which has flared up again since December 2023 with several attacks on the public and armed forces, has led to a military response since July 2021, with support first from Rwanda, with more than 2,000 troops, and from southern African countries, liberating districts near the gas projects.
