Lusa - Business News - Guinea-Bissau: Civil society debates enabling women more access to farmland

Bissau, April 16, 2024 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's non-governmental organisation Tiniguena is bringing together farmers from 16 rural communities on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss mechanisms to allow women better access to agricultural land, the NGO's executive secretary said.
Sociologist Miguel de Barros said that despite being the majority of the Guinean population and the country's "greatest productive force", "women continue to face enormous constraints" in accessing and owning land.
Tiniguena is one of the most prominent NGOs in Guinea-Bissau. It works to defend and promote natural resources and empower women in rural communities.
With the support of the Canadian Cooperation Agency, Tiniguena is currently running a project in 16 rural communities in the regions of Oio in the north, Bafatá in the east and Quinará in the south, bringing together more than 5,000 women.
Today and Wednesday, at the Tiniguena multi-purpose centre in Bissau, around 60 people, women and men, including traditional chiefs and religious leaders from the 16 communities, will exchange experiences on how to proceed to allow women the right to private use of the land where they work.
In Guinea-Bissau, and in the light of the customs of almost all the ethnic groups, despite working on the land, women do not have access to their property. The fields are considered the property of the man, who rents them out to the woman.
The recently approved Land Law has changed this reality, although it is not yet being observed in most rural communities.
"The confusion over the right to access land is not about women, but about the myths created to block women from having the right to the land where they grow crops," stressed Tiniguena's executive secretary.
Miguel de Barros emphasised that this situation "means that women are always at a disadvantage" from an economic point of view, "even though they are the main element in the agricultural production chain".
In addition to the debate on access to and ownership of land, Tiniguena wants the 16 rural communities to exchange experiences on how they manage water, how they value the soil, what models they adopt in terms of productive diversification, as well as the transformation of products and how they get them to market.
Tiniguena believes that the exchange of experiences and the full integration of the women of the 16 communities, which will involve their access to and private use of the farmland, will help to foster solidarity within them, and encourage agroecology.
