Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Tourism revenue rises 11% to €506.7M in first two months of 2024

Lisbon, April 15,2024 (Lusa) - Total revenue from the tourist accommodation sector grew by 11.2% and revenue from accommodation increased by 10.8% year-on-year until February, reaching €506.7 million and €367.5 million, respectively, the INE announced on Monday.
According to Statistics Portugal(INE), in the period from January to February, there were 7.7 million overnight stays with year-on-year growth of 3.3% (+0.3% for residents and +4.9% for non-residents).
The statistical institute points out that these results "were influenced [...] by the fact that 2024 is a leap year and, as such, the month of February this year had 29 days, one more than in 2023".
In February alone, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 1.8 million guests (+7.0%) and 4.3 million overnight stays (+6.4%), generating €276.4 million in total revenue (+13.0%) and €202.1 million in revenue from accommodation (+3.1 %).
In February, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at €37.80 euros (+4.5%), while the average revenue per occupied room (ADR) was €83.80 (+6.%).
"The ADR reached its highest values in Greater Lisbon (€107.80) and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (€85.60)," the INE said.
In February, Greater Lisbon was the region that contributed most to overall revenue (36.1% of total revenue and 37.9% of revenue from accommodation), followed by the North (16.1% and 16.4%, respectively), the Algarve and Madeira (15.2% and 14.4%, in the same order, in both).
"All regions recorded growth in revenue, with the biggest increases occurring in the West and Tagus Valley (+26.% in total revenue and +23.8% in revenue from accommodation) and Greater Lisbon (+16.0% and +14.8%, respectively)," the INE noted.
In February, the municipality of Lisbon accounted for 24.3% of all overnight stays (12.1% of all overnight stays by residents and 30.3% by non-residents).
Among the municipalities with the highest share of total overnight stays in February, INE emphasised Lisbon and Porto, with increases of 8.3% and 10.5%, respectively.
Considering all means of accommodation (tourist accommodation establishments, campsites and holiday camps and youth hostels), in the accumulated period from January to February overnight stays increased by 2.7% (+0.2% for residents and +4.0% for non-residents).
Considering only the second month of the year, there were 1.8 million guests and 4.6 million overnight stays, corresponding to growths of 6.6% and 5.8%, respectively.
Overnight stays by residents increased by 2.7% and those by non-residents by 7.4%, with the average stay (2.49 nights) decreasing by 0.7% (-0.4% for residents and -2.1% for non-residents).
