Lusa - Business News - Macau: Govt. discourages use of jacket and tie to save on AC

Macau, June 12 (Lusa) - Macau plans to raise awareness of ways to save energy and, as of Tuesday, will reduce the consumption of office air conditioners and discourage the use of jackets and ties at work.
The Office for the Development of the Macau Energy Sector (GDSE) issued a statement on combating climate change "by promoting a culture of light clothing, discouraging use of jackets and ties whenever possible and keeping the temperature of air conditioning at no less than 25º celsius," in order to save energy.
Concern over energy consumption has prompted the authorities to launch a campaign that encourages civil servants to wear cooler and more informal clothes, so that air conditioning in offices need not be so cold and consume so much energy.
The campaign will run until 31 August.
"Workers from private companies, industrial and commercial organisations and associations are also invited to take part in this action in order to jointly promote a culture of energy conservation and create a saving environment," the statement said.
The measure is not unprecedented in Asia.
Every summer, which is usually very hot and humid, civil servants and other workers in Japan are encouraged to leave their jackets and ties at home for a more rational use of air conditioning in workplaces.
Macau Energy Conservation Week 2018 is held in Macau this week, and on the first day of the week, local authorities urged civil society and business to turn off all unnecessary lights at home, in casinos and companies to promote a more environmentally friendly city.
According to the GDSE, "six casinos, several hotels, banks, shops and some tourist sites were signed up," for the initiative.
The "Turn Off the Lights for One Hour" initiative ran from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
