MAP - Morocco Takes Part in 108th Session of UNWTO Executive Council




San Sebastian -25 may 2018–(MAP)-State Secretary for tourism, Lamia Boutaleb, leads the Moroccan delegation that is taking part in the 108th session of the Executive Council of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), which is held in San Sebastian, Spain, on 23-25 May.
Speaking on this occasion, Boutaleb highlighted the important role played by the tourism sector in the economic, social and territorial development of Morocco, as well as its significant contribution to the Kingdom’s macroeconomic balances.
She also underlined the important efforts made by Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, to set up fruitful South-South partnerships in the tourism sector with several African countries.
Boutaleb also shed light on the strengths of Morocco to host the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization in Marrakech in 2021, while inviting the countries attending the meeting to support Morocco’s candidacy.
The State Secretary recalled that Morocco, in its capacity as a member of the UNWTO Committee on Tourism and Sustainability, is actively contributing to the work of this body.
She pointed out that the Kingdom is also a member of the "One Planet -Sustainable Tourism Network", which is aimed at advancing sustainable consumption and production in the tourism sector.
Boutaleb recalled the main objectives of the project “African Caravan on Sustainable and Responsible Tourism”, led by Morocco and which enabled the signing of the African Charter on Sustainable and Responsible Tourism on the sidelines of the COP22 held in Marrakesh.
She also highlighted Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup, underlining the structuring impact that the organization of this global event can have on the tourism development in Morocco and the African continent.
She stressed, in this regard, that Morocco is a country of openness, peace and tolerance, and that this bid, which is placed under the sign of sustainability, is that of the whole African continent.
In the margins of the UNWTO Executive Board, Boutaleb held talks with the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, as well as with ministers of tourism from the Republic of Congo, India, Argentina and Sudan.
The talks focused on the means to enhance bilateral relations in the tourism sector and Morocco’s bid to host the UNWTO General Assembly in 2021.
