NNA - Information Minister at 'Let's Tweet' conference: Our role fundamental protecting standards through which we exercise freedom

NNA - Information Minister, Melhem Riachy, said on Tuesday that Twitter secured ample space for everyone to participate and communicate, yet it provided "little space for those whose aim is to defame and offend others."

Twitter has launched on Tuesday its first conference in Lebanon,"Yalla-Nghared", Arabic for "Let's Tweet", under the patronage of Information Minister, Melhem Riachy, at the Movenpick Hotel in Beirut.

The conference aims at ensuring better understanding of Twitter and training users for improved virtual communication and acquisition of advanced skills in this area.

"We play a primary role in the protection of ethics and standards through which we exercise freedom; the only criterion is respect for the freedom of others by avoiding direct insults delivering messages to them," Riachy said.

The Information Minister went on to request of the Ministry of Justice to give victims the right to object if subjected to libel and slander. "It is the duty of the judiciary to have an expeditious judicial body that imposes fines to that end."

Riachy also explained that he had delved deeper into this matter and discovered that despite the fact that defamers should pay huge fines -- as per the existing law, but there remained some difficulty applying it.

"The number of judges is relatively small, yet there are huge numbers of litigations," Riachy explained, pledging to discuss the matter with the Supreme Council of Justice and with the Minister of Justice as soon as possible.

In addition to Minister Riachy's speech, the conference program will include and a discussion forum with Twitter Director in the Middle East, Kinda Ibrahim, about storytelling through Twitter and the best tools and practices.
