Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Beer running dry in north of the country and prices double

Maputo, May 15 (Lusa) - There is a lack of beer in Lichinga, the capital of Niassa province, northern Mozambique, more than 2,000 kilometres from the capital, Maputo, and some bottles cost almost double their usual price, local daily newspaper Notícias reported.
For the last three weeks there has been a lack of supply of the main Mozambican beer brands due to the poor state of repair of roads, a logistics operator cited by the newspaper said.
This means no road transport is available to make connections, at least any further than the provincial capital of Nampula, he added.
As a result, the cheapest corn beer on the market has already risen in price from 25 to 40 meticais (about €0.50).
Eating houses are complaining about a lack of customers, with Lichinga and the districts of Sanga and Lago being most affected.
However, the Inspection of Economic Activities, quoted by the newspaper, pledged to keep an eye on "speculation" about the price of beer.
Niassa province is one of the most affected by lack of access roads in Mozambique.
Over the past year, the Government has reopened the railway to passengers and goods to Lichinga, thanks to an investment from the Northern Development Corridor, focused on carrying products from the mines in the interior of the country to the port of Nacala.
