EFE - SPAIN POLITICS - Spain parties demand that politician accused of faking Master's degree resign

Madrid, Mar 21 (EFE).- Opposition groups in Spain were on Wednesday demanding explanations and a resignation from the president of Madrid's regional government, who a newspaper found to have allegedly falsified grades for her Master's degree from a public university, including for her final thesis.
The leader of the Madrid regional branch of the Socialist Party (PSOE), Jose Manuel Franco, said it was vital that Cristina Cifuentes, from the ruling Popular Party, respond to the allegations made by newspaper eldiario, which claimed that she had not finished two of the six modules required to obtain a Master's degree in regional law at the King Juan Carlos University in 2011-2012.
In 2014, a university employee from a different campus reportedly accessed Cifuentes' records and changed the grades on two modules, including her final project worth 24 of 60 credits, from "not presented" to "notable," the third-highest grade in the Spanish system equivalent to an American "C," according to eldiario.
"In other countries, this would carry an immediate resignation," said Franco on his official Twitter account.
Despite the grades changing in 2014, the newspaper claimed to have found no evidence that the conservative politician had re-registered in the classes or taken any exams, though two weeks later she supposedly paid a fee to receive her title.
Spain is separated into 17 semi-autonomous regions and eldiario said that Cifuentes, who has led the Madrid region since 2015, had also not completed a module studying their complex financing systems.
Iñigo Errejon, a lawmaker for the left-wing Podemos party who on Tuesday questioned Cifuentes as part of a congressional committee investigating alleged irregular financing by the PP, said: "In Germany, a minister resigned for a lot less."
In a press conference, university dean Javier Ramos denied there were any irregularities in Cifuentes' academic record and said the incomplete grades she originally received were due to a transcription error.
