Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Mocímboa da Praia aerodrome reopens as LNG project prepared

Maputo, Feb. 12 (Lusa) - The aerodrome at Mocímboa da Praia, in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, on Monday reopens to non-scheduled international flights, with a view to facilitating planned investments in natural gas in the region, the government announced on Monday.
The airfield's two-kilometre runway is just minutes by land or sea from the Afungi peninsula in Palma district, where in the next five to six years an industrial zone is to spring up around a gas liquefaction plant whose output is to be exported worldwide in tankers.
The need to fly in equipment for this liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is one of the reasons why the aerodrome is being reopened, following the government's decision in December to grant authorisation for international flights there. That was after work had been carried out on the site to improve safety standards to world levels.
The consortium with the licence to pump natural gas in the area is led by Anadarko of the US, which at the end of 2017 began the process of resettling locals on the site where the new industrial zone is to be built.
There were clashes between groups of armed men and security forces in the Mocímboa da Praia area from October through January, without its being clear what was behind the violence.
