Lusa - Business News - Macau: Five new prizes in second Portuguese-Chinese translation competition

Macau, China, Dec.6 (Lusa) – Five honourable mentions for oustanding work in translations is to be the main novelty in the second ever world Chinese-Portuguese competition in the field organised by the Polytechnic Institute of Macau (IPM), the institution announced on Wednesday.
The aim of making these five extra awards is to encourage "the participation of more students" from all over the world and "not only from Macau, from mainland China, from Portugal and from Brazil" as happened in the first competition to take place, said the IPM's president, Lei Heong Ieok.
“We want to encourage all students from around the world to strengthen and improver their capabilities and, through this competition, attract more teams from other Portuguese-speaking countries" in Africa, said the IMP president.
The IPM "will continue to bolster the teaching of the Portuguese language and maintain [its] cooperation with Portugal," he added, stressing Macau's role in the broader Chinese trade-promotion initiative 'One belt, one road'.
The competition's first prize is 140,000 patacas (€14,700), the second 105,000 patacas and the third 75,000. Organisers are also to award special prizes for teams from institutions of higher education in Macau: 68,000 patacas for first place and 35,000 for second.
Competing teams, made up of two or three students with a professor acting as an advisor, have three months to translate a text from Portuguese to Chinese with more than 5,000 sentences.
In its first year, the competition attracted 48 teams from mainland China, 27 teams from Macau, 10 from Portugal and two from Brazil.
The competition is organised by IPM and the Tertiary Education Services Office [GAES] of the Government of the Macau Special Administrative Region (RAEM) and the application deadline is the end of January 2018. On the 1st of March the organisers will then send the contestants the texts to translate which they have until the 1st June to hand in. At the end of the July the winners will then be announced.
The first prize is a total sum of 140,000 patacas (€14,700), the second is 105,000 patacas (€11,000) and the third 75,000 (€7,900). Each team that wins a honorary mention, will receive 25,000 patacas (€2,600).
