CNA - Tourist arrivals at a historic high this April

Tourist arrivals in April this year increased by 4.8% on an annual basis, recording a historic high for the month, data released by the Statistical Service, on Friday, show. A small annual increase of 0.5% was also recorded for the first four months of the year, which also recorded a historic high.

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 329,308 in April 2019 compared to 314,143 in April 2018, recording an increase of 4.8%.

“April 2019 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month,” a Statistical Service press release published on its website says.

During the period January –April 2019 arrivals of tourists reached 686,783 compared to 683,581 in the same period of 2018, recording an increase of 0.5% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first four months of the year.

Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom were up by 5.4% this April compared to April last year while an increase of 2.3% was recorded in tourists from Russia and 37.0% increase from Israel.

Tourist arrivals from Greece remained at the same level as last year.

On the other hand, a drop of 16.4% in tourist arrivals was recorded from Germany and of 4.5% from Sweden.

The UK constitutes the main source of tourism for Cyprus this April, with a proportion of 35.4%. This is followed by arrivals from Russia at 15.2% of total arrivals, from Israel at 7.1% and from Greece at 6.2%.

Holidays was the reason of visiting Cyprus for 78.4% of people participating in the survey. Another 14.3% replied that they are visiting friends and relatives while 7.3% visited Cyprus on business.

At the same time, Cyprus residents’ trips abroad also increased this April by 3.1% compared to April 2018. A total of 116,970 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad in April compared to 113,477 in April last year.

An increase of 6.4% was recorded this April in the trips of residents to the United Kingdom, as well as a 53.9% increase from Russia.
