Lusa - Business News - Equatorial Guinea: Govt. party has over 78,000 votes in general election

Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, Nov. 13 (Lusa) - Equatorial Guinea's ruling party has counted more than 78,000 votes in the general and local elections that took place on Sunday, while the main opposition force has just 1,096, officials said.
President Obiang Nguema seized power in a military coup in 1979. He is Africa's longest serving leader and international organisations, including Human Rights Watch consider the regime in Equatorial Guinea to be non-democratic, with political opposition barely tolerated.
At a press conference late on Sunday, when a third of the total of around 300,000 voters in the country had been counted, the president of the electoral commission, who is also deputy prime minister and minister of the Interior, said "there were no incidents "during the day, but accused the second strongest party, "Citizens for Innovation" (CI), of having tried to "confuse the observers."
Many "party representatives at polling stations did not sign the attendance sheets and withdrew when observers arrived," said Clemente Engonga Nguema Onguene.
The minister was speaking to a room full of international observers, mostly from the African Union, but also representatives from the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, and announced the results district by district.
The president of the electoral commissionl also said that updated results would be released on Monday, from the elections for members - Senate and House of Representatives - and on Friday the results of the local elections will be announced.
However, ballot papers for the parliament are the same ones as those used for voting for municipal elections.
Lusa tried to obtain clarification on the differences there may be between the results for the different bodies, but was not able to get an answer.
In the Mongono district, where the President of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang was born, the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea has so far received more than 24,000 votes, while the other two candidates did not even compete.
In Malabo, the country's capital, the second most voted party, CI, has only counted 56 votes so far, a quarter of the number of supporters who attended their last rally in the city.
